A man was charged with assault on Monday for violently shaking his 2-month-old son.

George Vincent Wells, 25, is being held on $1 million bail in Pierce County Jail.

“This is horrible and inexplicable abuse,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “The defendant will be held fully accountable. If the baby dies, we will charge murder.”

Wells told detectives he accidentally dropped the baby while tossing him in the air on Feb. 6. However, doctors said the injuries were non-accidental and consistent with being shaken, according to information from the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

The mother of the child left her son with Wells while she went shopping. A short time later, Wells called the mother and told her the child wasn’t breathing.

When detectives arrived, the baby appeared lifeless and grey, had a faint pulse, and was not breathing.

At the hospital, doctors determined the child had severe brain injuries with no “real sign of brain activity,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
