Russell Wilson has again gotten the best of Peyton Manning, this time jumping past the Broncos quarterback to become the most popular NFL player in the sales of jerseys and other licensed products.
Wilson tops the list of sales tallied by NFL Players Inc. (NFLPI) from March 1, 2013, through February 28, 2014. Wilson soared 18 spots from #19 in the previous year to take the top spot from Manning, who held the second spot in the ranking.
The growth of the Seahawks popularity beyond the Northwest is more than evident. Wilson is joined on the list by running back Marshawn Lynch (#7) and cornerback Richard Sherman (#12).
Lynch, the only non-quarterback in the top 10, jumped 22 spots from #29. Sherman, after not making the top 50 at the start of the fiscal year, made his debut at #12.
The list is released quarterly by the marketing and licensing arm of the NFL Players Association. It’s based on total overall sales of all licensed products including women’s and youth game jerseys and t-shirts, player murals, figurines, matted and framed photos, bobbleheads, drinkware, jewelry and electronic device accessories.
NFLPI licensees generated retail sales exceeding $1 billion during the year.
