Earl Thomas hates being late to anything. So you can imagine how he felt Tuesday morning waiting on his family to get over to the Seahawks headquarters for a press conference announcing the signing of his big contract extension.
“I don’t like distractions, like today being late to this meeting I was like ‘come on family, let’s go.’ I got pulled over by the police. So this was kind of a whirlwind to get here.”
The star of the Legion of Boom laughed as he recounted the story for the dozens of media members and team officials gathered at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton. Even though he could have flashed his Super Bowl champion ring and played the big shot, the ever-humble Thomas said he kept his mouth shut.
“I didn’t try to bulldog him and say my name is Earl Thomas, because he’d be like ‘man this guy is cocky’ and give me a ticket. But he let me off. That’s the moral of the story,” Thomas laughed.
The Seahawks and Thomas agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $40 million with $27.725 guaranteed, according to numerous sources. The deal makes Thomas easily the highest-paid safety in the NFL.
“This is where I grew up because I came out of college so early. So I love this place, it’s very dear to my heart. It’s very sacred. Just the 12’s out there … I couldn’t play for a better place. I’m excited to keep this thing rolling,” he said.
