God has spoken, and he may have a Spanish accent

One of our do-nothing Congress’s biggest non-accomplishments has been immigration reform. But among the Hispanic members, there is a sense that after the election something big is going to happen.

“I’m done. I’m ready for the President to act,” declared Rep. Luis Gutierrez.

At a meeting of Hispanic leaders Wednesday, Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois, predicted that after the election President Obama will issue an executive order to allow as many as 5 million long-time immigrants without documents to stay in the country legally.

“Sometime before Christmas, some 5 million undocumented workers will be afforded an opportunity to come out of the shadows and into the light of day,” said Gutierrez. “Everybody in this room has to get ready to help them.”

Also at the event was conservative commentator Anna Navarro, who knows that an executive order would make her fellow Republicans pretty angry.

“I would say to my party, the best way to avoid executive action is to take legislative action,” said Navarro. “Pass something.”

But the most passionate voice was Reverend Tony Suarez, whose National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference represents 40,000 churches. He said that no devout Latino can ignore the thousands of children who streamed across the southern border over the summer.

“I tell my colleagues and my Evangelical brothers and sisters, if you are pro-life you cannot be anti-immigration because this is a life issue. God wants immigration reform,” said Suarez.

And if God wants immigration reform, I guess that settles it.
