The Federal Aviation Administration is about to require new safety measures on about 500 Boeing airplanes to make sure the pilots know when their planes are losing air speed.

The FAA wants airlines to install a new audible warning system in the cockpits of 737-600s and later models. It would provide an audible computer-generated voice telling the pilots they are losing air speed.

Low air speed, especially on landing, has led to several crashes on jets and turboprops over the last few years as pilots have failed to check their automated throttle systems and failed to be aware of their air speed.

The Wall Street Journal reports Boeing recommended the changes.

The FAA is expected to make them mandatory Monday.

The warning systems have been added to new 737s since May of 2012.
