The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting pet owners and veterinary professionals about certain Sportmix pet food products listed below, manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., that may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on grains used in pet food. At high levels, the toxin can cause illness and death in pets. Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning in pets include sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, or diarrhea. In severe cases, it can be fatal. In other cases, the pet may suffer liver damage but have no symptoms.

So far, the FDA is aware of at least 28 deaths and eight illnesses in dogs that ate the recalled product.
