Gas war sends Pierce County pump prices below $3 a gallon

Some Pierce County drivers are getting a big break thanks to a brewing gas war at the pumps, with prices at some stations dropping below $3 a gallon.
Seven Pierce County stations were selling gas Monday for $2.99 a gallon, according to TacomaGasPrices.com. The gas war started last week when a Bonney Lake area Fred Meyer started selling gas for $3.079 a gallon, the News Tribune reports. It then spread to the Parkland-Spanaway area, where prices dropped below the magical $3 mark.
The lowest pump price was found at Fred Meyer store at 20919 State Route 410 in Bonney Lake with a $2.979 price.
The gas war seems fairly limited. Prices at a Fred Meyer in Puyallup, just a few miles away from the stations selling gas for under $3, was going for $3.19 a gallon for regular.
The average price of a gallon of unleaded regular in the Tacoma area Monday was $3.34 a gallon. That’s eight cents a gallon less than a week earlier.
In the Seattle area, the lowest reported price for a gallon of unleaded regular was $3.09 at several locations in Kirkland and Federal Way.
The average price for a gallon of unleaded regular in the Seattle area was $3.447, unchanged from last week.
