A Lakewood man is charged with first-degree child assault for allegedly assaulting and shaking his seven-week-old daughter after an argument with the baby’s mother.

Raymon Tyhia, 35, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a Pierce County court. He’s being held on $500,000 bail.

Prosecutors say the baby suffered brain damage, brain hemorrhage and subdural hematoma in the October 3 assault.

Court documents say the suspect and the baby’s mother argued about how long it was taking to dress the child.

He reportedly got angry the baby was crying, grabbed her and dragged her across the bed by the leg before putting her into her crib.

The baby kept crying, and Tyhia allegedly pulled her from the the crib by her armpit, causing her head to bounce back and forth several times.

Tyhia told investigators the baby looked “out of it” for several minutes and quieted down before she started crying again.

The couple took the baby to the hospital on Oct. 9, because she was rolling her eyes and screaming, and had not eaten since the day before.

Doctors determined her injuries indicated other incidents of shaking as well.

Prosecutors say the baby was still hospitalized Wednesday.
