Christians not doing their job?

Harvard professor and attorney Alan Dershowitz was discussing the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court case in front of a Christian audience when he said, “You haven’t done a good enough job in the marketplace of ideas.”

He was talking about the feeling among Christians that American society is becoming less and less tolerant of religion.

To the point that some Christian businesses, like Hobby Lobby, felt they had to take a stand against the government for requiring them to pay for types of birth control that they could not in good conscience provide.

But Dershowitz’s point, and his audience seemed to appreciate it, was don’t get into the habit of running to Congress or the courts for help, go out and evangelize and win the debate on your own.

“Go out there and make religion more relevant to the life of young people. Don’t create conflicts between the rights of women and the rights of religion, between the rights of gays and the rights of religion, you have to figure out a way of making people love what you believe in and love what you’re doing,” said Dershowitz.

He even said he himself as a Jew would love to be evangelized. “It’s part of your religious freedom to try and convert us. We should respect it. We should admire it. We should welcome it so we can say, ‘wow, you think so well of us that you really want us to think well of you – thank you. But no thanks, I’m going to stick with mine,’ but I’m really going to take it as a compliment.”

And may the most appealing religion win.
