Escaped suspect manages to elude police, drive home handcuffed

A suspect who escaped from custody at Burien District Court has been arrested again, after driving all the way home to Renton while handcuffed.

King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West says deputies were called out last Friday, July 26, to help Burien Police officers searching for the man.

“The suspect was left sitting while the officer went after another suspect. Apparently the guy decided he wasn’t going to just sit there handcuffed and wait.”

The guy somehow managed to get to his car and drive home, but deputies had his address and were there waiting when he pulled into the driveway.

West says it looks like he used his knees to drive.

“When the deputies stopped him, he was sitting in the drivers seat, nobody else in the car, and he was still handcuffed with his hands behind his back,” says West.

The suspect faces additional charges. He was driving on a suspended license and was wanted on an outstanding Kent Municipal Court warrant.

West says the officer involved in the escape shouldn’t be blamed because he has to supervise a number of detainees, including those a judge orders arrested during proceedings. She adds with the holding cell downstairs, he can’t be in two places at once.
