Work is moving forward on the new bridge to permanently replace the one over the Skagit River that collapsed in May.

Travis Phelps with the Washington State Department of Transportation says a work barge and a crane are in place.

“We’re starting to move in the bulk of our equipment. Over the next several months, you’ll start to see platforms and rail systems start to be installed.”

Phelps says they’ll be building the permanent replacement next to the temporary span.

“After the Labor Day weekend, we’ll close down I-5 and lift the temporary span out on rails and slide the new permanent span into place.”

The new bridge should be ready for drivers by Oct. 1.
