Grads, construction to make for weekend traffic across Puget Sound

Jun 14, 2013, 3:56 PM | Updated: 4:27 pm

Grads, dads, and a healthy dose of construction are combining to make for a busy weekend on area roadways.

Expect plenty of traffic tie ups around CenturyLink Field, where the University of Washington stages its graduation ceremony at noon on Saturday.

Seattle University holds its graduation Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at KeyArena.

Traffic will also be busy heading to Bellingham this weekend as Western Washington University sends off its graduates Saturday. The Skagit River bridge on I-5 is still closed because of last month’s collapse, so heavy congestion is expected on detours.

Also Saturday, a big bike Washington State Bike Association junior race in the Skagit Valley is expected to draw upwards of 3,000 cyclists, prompting changes to the existing detours around the bridge.

Construction on SR 518 could slow the drive to Sea-Tac Airport over the weekend in early morning or late evening hours as Washington State Department of Transportation crews replace concrete panels.

Meantime, up to three lanes of southbound I-405 between Northeast 70th Street and SR 520 will be closed starting at 8:00 p.m. Saturday. One lane will reopen by 5:00 a.m. Sunday with all lanes reopen by 9:00 a.m.

In Tacoma, WSDOT says pavement work will close three left eastbound SR 16 lanes across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Friday night at 9:00 p.m. They’re expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
