A contractor in Federal Way has made some extra work for himself and a mess for the school district after tearing up a big chunk of the running track at the wrong school.

The contractor got confused about the project and ended up at Sequoyah Middle School Monday instead of nearby Saghalie Middle School.

“His project manager showed up about the same time the principal recognized that work wasn’t scheduled for the school,” said Rod Leland, Director of Facility Services at Federal Way Public Schools.

Leland said the contractor had removed between 15-20 percent of the track before the mistake was caught. He said the project manager took full responsibility and promised to fix it as soon as possible.

“They’re a local contractor that has done work in the district for 40 years, strong supporter of the school district and they said ‘Yep our mistake.'”

It’ll take about a week to repair the damaged track. The district will wait until the school year ends, Leland said.
