Rain once again cancels critical I-5 work in Marysville

Update

Work on I-5 is cancelled once again due to the weekend forecast for Western Washington.

The expansion joint repair in Marsyville is delayed due rain in the forecast.

It’s been postponed by weather three weekends in a row now.

The state was going to try and jump the gun on the project this time. It planned tore-stripe the lanes on I-5 southbound in the construction zone tonight, a day before the work is set to begin.

Prepare for this doozy of an I-5 closure

“We need a dry weather window in order to do that,” said Lisa Van Cise with the Washington State Department of Transportation. “We are getting an additional opportunity where our contractor crews are looking at Thursday night and Friday night to go out and lay down this striping.

Once the work does start, the lanes out of I-5 will be 10-feet wide instead of 12-feet wide and the speed limit will be reduced.

“You will still have the same number of lanes to get to work. Speeds are going to be reduced. It will be slower for about a two-mile stretch,” Van Cise said. “For two miles you’ll have three lanes open – narrower. And because those lanes will be narrower, we’re talking about speeds of like 40 miles per hour.

Keep checking with KIRO Radio Chokepoints and we’ll let you know the situation before you hit the freeway, but you should prepare for changes.

“We will really need drivers in that situation to pay attention. It will be narrower lanes so keep your eyes forward,” Van Cise said. “And know that it will likely take you a little bit longer to get to work Friday morning.”
