Skeleton seized from South Kitsap home

May 10, 2013, 7:37 AM | Updated: 11:12 am

Police have seized a skeleton and casket from a South Kitsap home.

The King County Sheriff’s Office says it discovered the remains after the owner sent a picture of the bones to an inmate convicted for a murder in which a body was never found.

“It was intercepted by corrections officers and then turned over to us,” said King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West.

Investigators don’t believe the skeleton is related to the murder because the medical examiner says it appears to be very, very old. West said it’s not entirely clear why the skeleton’s owner sent the suspect the photo.

The skeleton is held together with screws and wiring, like you’d see in a teaching hospital.

“It was standing in what looked like an old bottom half of a casket,” said West.

The owner says he bought the skeleton for $100.

Authorities are working to identify the skeleton. It will be tuned over to an anthropologist after the medical examiner is finished.

West said even if the skeleton was sold legally long ago, it is still illegal to have now.
