With all the construction cranes around town, we here at MyNorthwest.com are often asked, “what are they building?”

Our weekly check on a big construction project around town takes us to Seattle’s Denny Triangle, where work is underway along Boren Avenue between Stewart St. and Howell on hill7, which includes an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot technology office building and a 14-story, 222-room Hilton Garden Inn.

What makes hill7 significant is the inclusion of the business hotel, one of the first in the area since the explosion of Amazon.com in South Lake Union.

“There’s so much employment growth in the neighborhood and downtown and South Lake Union, there are very few business hotels that cater to the business traveler,” says Douglas Howe, president of development and marketing with Touchstone Development.

While Touchstone is among the first to launch a new hotel project serving downtown in recent years, it’s not alone. At least three other new hotel projects are underway and slated to open in the next several years.

“We saw that opportunity early on,” Howe says of hill7.

Although Amazon gets most of the credit for the growth in the area, he points out Children’s Hospital, Google and Facebook alone have hired several thousand people recently, and with thousands more expected, the growth and development will continue.
