On the heels of a strike that saw disagreements between some members and leadership at the Northwest Carpenters Union, more trouble is brewing at union headquarters.

According to a recent statement, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) is investigating “voter fraud, pension and welfare investment improprieties, and other areas of mismanagement” at the Northwest Carpenters Union’s Kent office.

Three union leaders — Executive Secretary-Treasurer Evelyn Shapiro, Director of Organizing Juan Sanchez, and Director of Contract Administration Dan Hutchins — resigned last week.

The statement noted that trusteeship of the local union has been given to the UBC, and a new supervisor, James Gleason, was put in charge.

This comes after a three-week strike in which striking union members clashed with union leadership over whether to strike or settle.

The union declined an interview request, telling KIRO Radio that no further comments will be made while the investigation is underway.
