Former Seahawks icon returns to Seattle: ‘If ever a time for Russell to be rattled, tonight is it’

SEATTLE, WA - JANUARY 19: Head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson #3 of the Seattle Seahawks speak to the media after the Seahawks 23-17 victory against the San Francisco 49ers during the 2014 NFC Championship at CenturyLink Field on January 19, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. Russell Wilson – former Seattle Seahawks franchise icon who led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl XLVIII – will stand in Lumen Field Monday evening as a Denver Bronco, leaving Seattle to wonder if he will be applauded as a star or heckled as an opponent.

The energy in Lumen Field will likely rival 2014’s NFC Championship, where Wilson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass on fourth down against the 49ers to jet the Seahawks to their first of two Super Bowl appearances in as many years, says Gee Scott, host of KIRO Newsradio’s Gee and Ursula Show.

“The energy in that stadium is going to rival that. There’s going to be pandemonium in there,” Gee said.

Salk: Why Russell Wilson gave Broncos a break he wouldn’t have given Seahawks

Wilson’s number will eventually be retired in the rafters of Lumen Field, according to Gee. When that day comes, Seahawks fans will applaud the Super Bowl champion with a standing ovation, but not Monday night when the Broncos take the field.

“Tonight, when you’re wearing that number three as a Denver Bronco? No,” Gee added.

If Wilson is booed, it remains to be seen how the star quarterback will take the pressure from fans he used to adore as “12s.”

“I think if there’s ever a time for him to be rattled, tonight is going to be it,” Gee offered.

Head coach Pete Carroll made the announcement two weeks ago that Geno Smith, instead of newly-acquired Drew Lock, will be the franchise’s starting quarterback. Smith has a career record of 13-21, including a 1-2 stint last year when he had to replace an injured Russell Wilson.

The Broncos and Seahawks will kick off at 5:15 p.m. Monday night. You can hear it live on KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM and Seattle Sports 710 AM beginning with pregame coverage at 2:00 p.m.
