Dori: ‘When Harry Met Sally’ was right about men, women

Aug 20, 2016, 10:58 PM

It’s a debate that has lingered for generations, through “When Harry Met Sally,” and now on to KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson Show.

Can two people be friends if they are on opposite ends of the spectrum of attraction? For Dori, “When Harry Met Sally” set the argument in stone and nothing has changed.

Should service animals be allowed to eat at restaurant tables?

Dori caught that board operator Sean DeTore was going to the Seahawks vs. Vikings preseason game. With a woman who was not his girlfriend. And further, Sean’s girlfriend also managed to get tickets to the same game with another man.

“They are right in the front row,” Sean noted.

Dori wasn’t having it. It prompted the same conversation that people have been having ever since “When Harry Met Sally” was released in 1989. The film is often referenced to this day, especially when it comes to the mystery at the core of the film: Can men and women really be friends?

“‘When Harry Met Sally’ was absolutely right,” he said. “Girls can be friends with guys. Guys can’t be friends with girls. It was as true in 1989 when Harry and Sally tried to pull it off as it is today. It’s still true.”

“I trust my girlfriend and she trusts me,” Sean countered.

“Does she fancy you?” Dori asked.

“No,” Sean said.

And how does he know this?

“Because we are platonic. And I know that,” Sean said.

To confuse Dori further, one of Sean’s oldest and best friends is KIRO Radio’s Rachel Belle.

“Rachel and I have been friends for like 10 years, maybe more,” he said. “It’s platonic. And Rachel knows my girlfriend – we’re all comfy with each other. I think something like that is OK.”

This is Dori’s argument. He feels it is inappropriate to have emotional conversations with a woman. That talk should be with his wife.

“I just think it’s dangerous for guys to get emotionally close to the opposite sex, female co-workers,” Dori said. “But if you and your girlfriend got married, would she be OK if you sat on the phone for a half hour talking with Rachel about personal feelings type stuff?”

“Rachel and I talk about a lot of things that I’m not necessarily going to relay to my girlfriend,” Sean said.

Which prompted producer Nicole to break her silence: “That’s trouble right there Sean.”

“No,” Sean said. “It’s like talking to a therapist. But you’re talking with a good friend.”
