Police were forced to evacuate multiple blocks in Lakewood as police negotiated with an armed burglary suspect during a day-long standoff.

The blocked-off area of Lakewood was near Joint Base Lewis–McChord (JBLM).

“If you are in the area of 110th Street and 25th Avenue S., leave the area now and stay out of the area until police clear it,” Lakewood Police wrote in an evacuation alert Wednesday.

Lakewood Police told KIRO Newsradio they responded to reports of a suspicious person at an auto parts store just after 9 a.m., believing the person could be a possible burglary suspect. According to police, the person of interest took off, scaled a fence topped with razor wire and landed on JBLM property. The person went into a commercial building and, several minutes later, shots were fired.

Lakewood Police could only confirm that shots were fired, as of this reporting, not stating who fired the shots or if anyone was injured.

Officers later confirmed one employee was in the store with the suspect. According to KIRO 7, the victim tried to remove the gun from the suspect, but was assaulted. The employee eventually managed to escape, suffering from serious injuries.

The victim was taken to the hospital and was released a short time later.

At approximately 6 p.m. — nearly nine hours after the standoff began — the suspect tried to make a run for it. Police fired shots and hit the suspect. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition, as of this reporting.
