A shooting just north of Everett High School occurred after witnesses say they heard a man asking for money and his cellphone.

One witness told KIRO 7 that she was walking to work around 6:45 a.m. when she found herself in the middle of a dispute between a man and a woman in the 2300 block of Colby Avenue on Wednesday.

“She was just saying, leave me alone and he said, ‘I know you got money,’ and was kind of yelling at her,” the witness told KIRO 7.

Another witness said he heard the man asking for his cellphone back.

As the man began approaching the woman, according to the witness, she brought up a gun and said, “get away from me.”

After the woman shot the man, he fell to the ground and she ran.

The victim is 35. He was shot in the hip and taken to Providence Hospital.

The suspect is a woman with blonde hair. She was wearing a white hat.

Police and a Snohomish County Sheriff K-9 unit searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The shooting forced the lockdown of Everett High School. Students were taken into the gym.

Police ended their search around 8 a.m.

Police closed Colby Avenue between 21st and 23rd. Part of the high school’s campus was closed as well.
