Gee Scott explains what’s wrong with the college admissions process

Stanley Zhong, a 19-year-old self-taught programmer, is suing the University of Washington and other colleges, alleging racial discrimination in the admissions process, Fox News reported.

Gee Scott, co-host of “The Gee and Ursula Show” on KIRO Newsradio, believes there is a broader issue with college admissions.

“I’ve never liked the college admissions process,” he shared. “It has been something, as you all know, what it has been over the last 50 years, because at one point in time, it was definitely unfair for a lot of people, that’s one. Two of the things specifically that I don’t like about the admissions process is the whole legacy admissions, when that’s where colleges and universities can have preferential treatment for alumni, kids and grandkids and that thing also, don’t forget about the one person that buys the building, and so when they buy the building, then all of their family is going to be able to get into it.”

Gee added that undoing years of conformity is not easy.

“When you have history, and you have so many years when it was so unfair, now you’re getting to the point where you’re trying to make it fair. So it’s kind of hard to do, because for 50 plus 100 something years you’ve been doing it so unfair that now it’s hard to do,” he said.

Gee is hopeful Zhong’s lawsuit will move forward.

“I want this lawsuit to go through because I want discovery,” he shared. “I want you to pull and show how all of the practices happen. I want you to show how subjective it has been. And going forward, let’s have it less subjective.”

Ursula has message for parents of kids going through college admissions

Ursula Reutin, co-host of “Gee and Ursula,” had a message for parents watching their children go through the process of getting into a college.

“For all the parents who are going through this right now, your kid is going to get—and I needed to know this when I had a senior, who I was also very involved in their college admissions—your kid is going to get into a school that is appropriate, and what they do in that school eventually is going to be much more important than the name of that school,” she said. “And the other thing I would say is, why are we still, to this day, having kids apply to 20 different colleges that they have no interest in ever attending, only to be able to say that they got into this XYZ college and brag about it on Instagram.”
