Harger: Bruce Harrell finally showed us ‘B-Rucy’ — the mayor Seattle never got

Bruce Harrell finally showed up yesterday. Not Mayor Harrell, the carefully scripted public official. But someone else entirely. Listen to what he called himself:

“I’m thinking about pursuing an acting career coupled with a singing career, singing a little rap,” Harrell said after he announced he was conceding to Katie Wilson in the race for Seattle mayor Thursday. “I’m going to be known as ‘Master B-Russell.'”

“Master B-Rucy.” The guy who’s wanted to rap his political speeches for 16 years, but never did. Yesterday, he even joked that he’s the type to crack jokes at funerals. His friends and colleagues confirmed this. They all say the same thing: Bruce Harrell is genuinely funny.

Which makes the last four years even more inexplicable.

Where was this guy?

It’s not that Harrell never tried to show personality. Remember his State of the City speech earlier this year? He tried to inject some humor. He picked up a basketball and paused dramatically. Everyone thought he was about to announce the Sonics were returning to Seattle. Here’s what happened.

“I have an announcement to make,” Harrell said while rolling a basketball through his hands, followed by, “I’m just kidding.”

The room groaned. Social media destroyed him. Four hundred thirty thousand views of a joke dying in real time. That was the problem. When Harrell tried to be funny publicly, it felt forced and rehearsed, like someone told him he needed to “connect more.”

But yesterday, relaxed and unscripted, he was genuinely funny. Self-deprecating about his five days as mayor in 2017. Joking about embarrassing his wife with his rap dreams. This was natural. This was the guy who jokes at funerals. This was B-Rucy.

The disconnect is staggering. Everyone who knows him describes his warmth, humor, and genuine connection. But publicly? We got Mayor Harrell. Every answer measured. Every moment managed. The funeral joker became a PowerPoint presenter.

Yesterday, he admitted what his data probably showed weeks ago: young voters felt unheard. Housing costs are crushing them. They wanted change, any change. Katie Wilson promised that change. Government grocery stores, rent control, and social housing. Will any of it work with a $250 million deficit? Probably not. But at least she connected with their frustration.

Harrell had real accomplishments. Crime down. Downtown recovering. Hundreds of new cops hired. But he presented it all like a quarterly earnings report, occasionally interrupted by basketball props and forced punchlines.

The irony is painful. A man who jokes at funerals couldn’t relax at a press conference. The guy who yesterday said “don’t fear failure” spent four years fearing being himself.

“I’m not retired. I’m not going anywhere,” he said yesterday. Great. Maybe B-Rucy can stick around this time.

Seattle just elected Katie Wilson, who promises revolution while the city bleeds red ink. She’ll have to deliver something to those young voters who believed her vision. Good luck with that.

But watching Harrell yesterday, finally comfortable in his own skin, you have to wonder what might have been.

B-Rucy could have won this election. Too bad we got Mayor Harrell instead.
