A “violent” and “unprovoked” assault left a 34-year-old man critically injured in Seattle’s Central Business District early Monday morning.

Just after midnight, Seattle Police Department (SPD) officers responded to reports of a man outside a hotel in the 500 block of Madison Street, SPD announced.

As officers arrived, they found a man lying on the ground with significant head trauma. SPD provided medical attention until the Seattle Fire Department medics arrived, and the victim was later transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

Camera footage reveals Seattle attack after early reports suggested accidental fall

Early reports suggested that the man could have fallen and hit his head on the ground. SPD noted that as its investigation progressed, surveillance footage showed what had actually occurred.

The victim was bent over in front of the hotel when the suspect approached him and allegedly struck him on the head with an object. The victim was knocked to the ground as a result.

The suspect then repeatedly struck the victim before leaving the scene. SPD noted there is currently no suspect in custody.

Homicide and Assault Unit detectives are leading the investigation and are working to determine the events preceding the assault.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Seattle Police Department’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.
