A second suspect was arrested Monday in Redmond in connection with a violent and unprovoked assault of a 77-year-old man.

On May 4, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Redmond Police Department (RPD) officers responded to a business in the 7800 block of Leary Way after reports of a man matching the description of an assault suspect from Seattle, RPD reported.

The caller reported that the suspect was recognized in news coverage released earlier in the day. The video included surveillance footage of two men “violently” attacking an elderly man near Third Avenue and Pike Street in Seattle.

RPD noted its Real-Time Information Center played a key role in confirming the identity of the suspect in Redmond by giving officers access to Seattle camera images as they were on the scene.

With help from the Seattle Police Department (SPD), officers arrested the second assault suspect and booked him into the King County Jail.

Elderly man beaten, left on pavement in unprovoked downtown Seattle attack

On April 19 at approximately 9:50 p.m., SPD officers responded to reports of the assault. The victim had walked southbound after getting off a bus and was later assaulted by the suspects, breaking several bones and leaving him on the pavement.

“When you break a bone as a young person, it hurts, and it takes a long time to recover. When you’re 77 — even in great shape — it’s a lot harder,” Casey McNerthney, a spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO), said.

The 77-year-old man suffered a broken arm, a broken knee, and a gash on his forehead, according to charging documents. The Seattle Fire Department responded and treated the victim before he was transported to the VA hospital for additional treatment. He was in the hospital for at least a week after the attack.

“It’s shocking to think that somebody can be this cruel to another person,” McNerthney said.

A security guard told SPD that one of the suspects, Ahmed Osman, remained in the area. Shortly after, officers located the 29-year-old suspect and arrested him.

The second suspect remained outstanding until Monday, when a community member recognized him from footage released by SPD’s Real Time Crime Center.

“This arrest is the direct result of strong collaboration between agencies and the vigilance of our community,” Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe stated. “By combining real-time technology with focused investigative work, we are able to identify suspects quickly and hold violent offenders accountable.”

Initial suspect booked, released, and now wanted on $200K warrant

SPD booked Osman into the King County Jail for felony assault on April 19. Osman was released on bail two days later and is currently wanted on a $200,000 warrant as officers are actively searching for him.

Law enforcement has asked anyone with information about the outstanding suspect’s whereabouts to contact the authorities.

“Community awareness and timely reporting continue to play a critical role in public safety,” RPD stated.

Anyone who sees the suspect is warned not to approach him and call 911 immediately. Any tips can also be provided to local law enforcement agencies.
