If you’re in Utah late July, you might be wondering if it’s still the Fourth of July. Here, the fireworks are still popping, the parades are still rolling, and the rodeos are still selling out. But they’re celebrating another holiday, Pioneer Day, and the state goes big.
Every July 24, the state celebrates the arrival of the first Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 after a months-long journey west. Over the years, the holiday has grown beyond its historical roots into one of the biggest celebrations of the summer. Many businesses and government offices even close for the day, while communities fill their streets with parades, PRCA rodeos, concerts, carnivals and fireworks. The festivities even spill across state lines into neighboring communities founded by early pioneers, including parts of Arizona and Nevada.
Join in on a uniquely West tradition and take a trip for some of the best parades, rodeos and more. From Utah to Arizona, here are the biggest Pioneer Day celebrations happening July 24.

The iconic Days of ’47 Parade rolls through downtown on the morning of July 24, while the nationally recognized Days of ’47 Rodeo brings five nights of bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding and family entertainment to the Utah State Fairpark. Add in fireworks, festivals and community events, and it’s the biggest Pioneer Day celebration in the state.
