In the Cascades of Oregon is one of the purest lakes on the planet, formed by ancient glaciers and filled solely from snow melt and springs. There are no gas-powered or electric boats above 10 mph allowed here, making for a serene paddling experience. Perhaps what makes this lake worth the visit is its crystal-clear waters. On the lake, you can dip your paddle into water so clear, you’ll see boulders resting as far as 100 feet below, and it feels as though you’re gliding through liquid glass, surrounded by fir and hemlock.

Stay in Oakridge or make a camping trip out of your experience at one of the lakeside campgrounds, like North Waldo or Shadow Bay, where twilight brings a brilliant night sky, revealing constellations above the crystal-clear lake. In summer, the surrounding trails burst with ripe huckleberries. Whether you’re paddling at sunrise or savoring mountain berries at dusk, Waldo Lake is a serene pocket of Oregon wilderness that feels untouched by time. Waldo Lake is adjacent to the Waldo Lake Wilderness Area, popular with backcountry hikers.

Bring your own kayak or canoe—there are no rental facilities directly on-site—or stop in Eugene or Oakridge to rent gear before your adventure. Learn more at the U.S. Forest Service website at fs.usda.gov/r06/willamette/recreation/waldo-lake-area. Plan your trip to the Oakridge area at eugenecascadescoast.org/oakridge-westfir.

But on my last trip to the region, I did the unthinkable. I drove right through Banff, no-stops, no […]

The Great Wilderness RV Trip From Vancouver, B.C. Northward and Back

Originally published on Northwest Travel & Life. Our technological ineptitude is unrivaled. So, this is what the video—describing our upcoming CanaDream RV rental’s technical systems—sounded like to us: Attach the Schadenfreude circuit breakers to the Heffalump condenser. Honk the Flugelhorn. Then, unbraid the high-voltage Litz wires and connect them inversely to their counterparts. Failure to […]
