A South Seattle neighborhood is once again dealing with the aftermath of gunfire after a shootout left multiple homes and vehicles damaged Tuesday night.

Seattle police said officers responded around 9:29 p.m. Sept. 2 to reports of a shooting near the 2900 block of S Holly Street in the New Holly neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found more than 40 spent shell casings scattered across the roadway and a nearby park. Investigators determined at least five residences and three vehicles had been struck by bullets. No injuries were reported.

According to police, the investigation indicates two vehicles pulled into the intersection and gunfire was exchanged between people in the park and occupants of one or more vehicles on the street.

The Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) Gun Violence Reduction Unit is investigating what led to the shooting.

For neighbors, the damage left behind is a reminder of a problem they say is all too familiar.

One bullet tore through a woman’s front door and lodged in a staircase inside her home.

Another bullet punched through the kitchen of a home on the other end of the block.

Nia, who lives in the neighborhood, said her mother and brother dropped to the floor upstairs as shots rang out.

“I was just grateful. Thank God nobody was downstairs,” she said. “She was upstairs, and she was like, we lay on the floor because it was her and my brother. They were flat on the floor, just kind of waiting for it to pass by.”

Nia said she and her mother had been downstairs moments before the shooting.

The latest shooting was especially unsettling for Nia, who recalled several bullets coming through her home last summer.

“Last year when I saw it pass by my ear, I was like, imagine I was here a second time,” she said.

Nia said neighbors check in on each other amid the rash of gun violence.

“I feel like it happens often around this area,” Nia said. “Everybody’s like, ‘Hey, is everything OK? How many bullets have gone through? Do you guys need anything?'”

“We all look out for each other.”
