A Federal Way High School football player was struck and killed by a car Friday night.
Court documents identify him as 16-year-old Daniel Tuiasosopo. Family members identified him to KOMO News as Deejay Tuiasosopo.
An aunt confirmed to KOMO News that he was part of the Tuiasosopo family, which includes multiple professional athletes and coaches in the region.
Federal Way police said two cars collided at Pacific Highway South and South 304th Street, near Memorial Stadium, where Federal Way had defeated White River earlier that night.
Driver held on $200,000 bail as prosecutors await charging decision
According to court documents, surveillance footage showed a Ford F-150 driver making a left turn at a flashing yellow arrow and failing to yield to an approaching Lexus sedan, which had a green light.
The pickup collided with the Lexus, causing the sedan to strike Tuiasosopo on the sidewalk around 11 p.m., police said. Authorities and first responders tried to save Tuiasosopo, but he died at the scene.
Both drivers stayed at the scene, according to KIRO 7.
Police arrested the pickup’s 29-year-old driver on investigation of vehicular homicide. He is being held on $200,000 bail but has not been formally charged, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
An officer reported smelling alcohol near the pickup and on the driver, according to court documents. The driver told police he had consumed a tall can of beer.
A preliminary breath test registered 0.170, the documents stated. Later breath testing at the police department produced readings ranging from 0.122 to 0.124. Police also obtained a warrant to collect blood samples.
At a Saturday hearing, a judge found probable cause for the arrest and granted prosecutors’ request for $200,000 bail. Prosecutors said they anticipate receiving the case from police by Wednesday for a charging decision.
MyNorthwest does not name suspects until they have been officially charged.
Federal Way police are investigating the incident.
Family and friends honor football player who dreamed of a state title
Family and friends went to the scene on Saturday, where balloons, flowers, and candles now sit in a makeshift memorial.
Deejay Tuiasosopo’s grandfather was the brother of Manu Tuiasosopo, a former Seattle Seahawks player.
His aunts and uncles include famed University of Washington (UW) quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo and Leslie Gabriel, head coach for the UW women’s volleyball team.
Friends said Deejay Tuiasosopo had dreams of winning a state championship this year. Those dreams were cut short at just 16 years old.
