Dave Ross Commentary – Listen: Officials demand answers on iphone tracking cover-up

Officials want answers about this iPhone tracking cover up. They demand to know why iPhones are storing their owners movements, and how will they use that information?

Does anybody NOT KNOW the answer to those questions?

They’re storing your movements because they can, and they are going to use it to sell you stuff.

We hold on to this fantasy that commercial companies put up web sites for charitable purposes; that Twitter is about breaking news, that Facebook is about re-kindling old affairs.

But the truth is they are all there to sell you stuff.

And the best way to sell you stuff is to find out what you want, and plop it in front of your eyes with a coupon attached.

That is the fundamental purpose of the Internet. And I’m not saying it’s bad, in fact, it’s good.

It’s the key to the recovery. Number one key to the recovery – putting more money in employees pockets — just like Microsoft announced it’s going to do — and number two good thing for the economy, get those employees to spend it NOW.

And THAT’s the Internet’s job.

It has to gather enough data to find out what kind of car you like, so it can whisper “Buy that car, buy that car, everybody has one except you” while you’re trying to read the New York Times. And it needs the LOCATION information to say “You’re walking by the dealership right now… go in!”

Some people say this is creepy, I say This is how America comes back. Yes, I can hear you saying how is this different from the government injecting a chip into my butt?

But I assure you this is way different. When the iPhone rings, it doesn’t tickle NEARLY as much.
