Dec 30, 2016, 11:25 AM | Updated: 11:50 am

Update: Four people have been found dead in a wreckage of a plane crash that lost contact with air traffic control in the northern Hood Canal area.

A search is underway in the northern Hood Canal area for a plane that air traffic controllers lost contact with Thursday night.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is coordinating the search in the area of Dabob Bay.

The plane left Seattle’s Boeing Field headed for Port Angeles just after 6 p.m. on Thursday and lost contact with air traffic control around 6:40 p.m. near the Dabob Bay area, east of Quilcene.

Report: Start of flu season already deadly in Snohomish County

The Federal Aviation Administration then contacted WSDOT.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office started a ground search and a U.S. Navy helicopter crew searched from the air Thursday night until visibility became too low to safely continue the search.

The ground search is underway and a Civil Air Patrol plane will launch Friday morning.

The WSDOT Air Support Team also has been dispatched to track the airplane’s emergency locator signal.

Details about the plane, pilot, and any occupants onboard are not being released, according to WSDOT.
