One person injured Thursday when a van left the road at Fifth Avenue and Pine Street remains in serious condition.
The 28-year-old male is the only remaining patient at Harborview Medical Center that was involved in the mid-day crash in downtown Seattle. The other three Harborview patients have been released.
The Seattle Police Department reports the crash occurred at Fifth and Pine just before noon. The van drove onto the sidewalk where it crashed into the front of a Gap store.
Harborview Medical Center received four patients, including:
- Male, 30s, in critical condition and undergoing surgery
- Male, 52, in satisfactory condition in the Emergency Department
- Two female patients, 28 and 39, in satisfactory condition in the Emergency Department
Witnesses told officers that the Shuttle Express van was traveling south on Fifth Avenue when it veered onto the sidewalk on the east side of the street. The van hit four people before crashing into a building.
Police believe the driver of the Shuttle Express van may have suffered from a medical emergency. The driver was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
“What we’ve determined so far … is that the Shuttle Express driver experienced some type of medical condition, then lost consciousness, the van then drove over to the sidewalk where it struck four pedestrians,” said Marc Garth Green with the Seattle Police Department.
“(Video of the crash) shows the van did not accelerate; there is nothing obvious to make this an intentional or deliberate act,” he said. “It just idles and then rolls through and strikes pedestrians.”
