Eroding Sand Point Way to close for repairs

North Seattle will have an ongoing traffic headache to deal with near Matthews Beach. A retaining wall at 8516 Sand Point Way NE is rapidly failing and will require replacement as soon as possible to prevent further risk to the roadway (and to the 16″ water main in the east shoulder).
The home owners are still in the house where a majority of the work needs to happen.

“Due to the steep slope and water saturation, soil is moving behind and underneath the retaining wall that is under the roadway shoulder closest to the property,” said Richard Sheridan with the City of Seattle. “Within the next week, SDOT will begin work on a new retaining wall that will be anchored in deeper, more stable soil.”
The City of Seattle will close Sand Point Way (near the NOAA campus) starting Monday, Feb. 8 to Feb. 25, 2016 to fix the problem before the roadway erodes further and endangers the public.
Pedestrians and bicycles will be able to use the Burke-Gilman Trail during the construction.
The full closure is expected to last three to four weeks and will likely be followed by another three to four weeks for northbound traffic.
Expect to see significant excavation work, boring for new support piles and retaining wall construction. The city believes the erosion issue is only occurring adjacent to the 8516 Sand Point Way property and no other homes on Lake Washington.
