King County drivers can expect major traffic delays during months-long I-5 project

The critical road work that slowed I-5 drivers through Snohomish County for months was just the beginning of summer construction.
Drivers can expect a paving project along I-5 between Tukwila and Federal Way to become the next dreaded work zone.
Five weekends of road closures will slow travel times beginning this Friday.

Southbound I-5 will be reduced to two lanes from 8 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday at the following locations on these dates:
• Between South 188th and South 219th streets, July 9-11, 15-18, and 22-25.
• From the Duwamish River to the Klickitat Driver overpass, Aug. 12-15.
• At the Duwamish River, Aug. 19-22.
Traffic backups are likely between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The state is resurfacing portions of I-5. The 13-mile stretch of southbound I-5 between the Duwamish River Bridge in Tukwila and South 320th Street in Federal Way has potholes, ruts, cracking and worn expansion joints.
“It ain’t pretty,” according to the state.
The work is weather dependent.
