Washington state lawmakers are under pressure to pass a transportation package to fix a notorious stretch of highway between Lake Stevens and Everett.

Representatives Suzan Delbene and Rick Larsen will also call for federal funding to rebuild the westbound US 2 trestle.

The state began researching traffic on the trestle in 2019, with input on floodplains, wetlands, and fish-bearing streams in the areas. It also gathered information from residents and people who regularly use the trestle.

WSDOT plans to replace the existing westbound trestle, built in 1968. The eastbound trestle was built in the 1990s.

The Highway 2 trestle is well-known for bottlenecks on I-5 during the morning and afternoon commutes. Because there is no improvement on I-5 planned, the backups are expected to last long during peak commute times.
