Three Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies suffered minor injuries early Tuesday after a police chase caused the closure of U.S. 2 between Snohomish and Monroe.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a vehicle theft on 316th Avenue SE at around 6 a.m., according to a statement published on the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.  Members of the law enforcement agency then located the stolen vehicle. But that prompted a pursuit that traveled west on U.S. 2 through Monroe. The chase ended when county deputies deployed spike strips, which stopped the vehicle in the 14200 block of U.S. 2.

Following the chase, three deputies were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries resulting from a collision between their vehicles.

The driver, a man from Seattle, was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

“He was expected to be booked into the Snohomish County Jail for eluding, second-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm,” the sheriff’s office release reads.

In addition, a passenger in the stolen vehicle was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and later released.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) confirmed the sheriff’s office chase caused a full closure of the highway in both directions.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed on X just before 6:40 a.m. the road being closed at Westwick Road west of Monroe after the incident and added that emergency responders are on the scene.

WSDOT confirmed in an update on X at 8:01 a.m. and in another at 9:39 a.m. that U.S. 2 still was closed in both directions after the early-morning incident.

WSP Public Information Officer Trooper Kelsey Harding reported on X at 11:49 a.m. that U.S. 2 had fully reopened following the incident and subsequent investigation.

Earlier in the day, it was suggested that drivers in that area should seek an alternate route. If that is not possible, travelers were told to expect delays.
