Snohomish County officials have announced it will cost about $900,000 to repair a section of Index‑Galena Road that washed out during the historic December flooding.

The damage occurred along the North Fork of the Skykomish River between mileposts 10 and 14, Snohomish County Public Works (SCPW) announced.

Repair of washed-out Index‑Galena Road estimated at $900,000

Index‑Galena Road, a rural route east of Index, Washington, has a history of flood‑related damage and repairs, and is a key access point for recreation and residents.

SCPW noted the repair is eligible for emergency federal funding to help cover part of the cost, reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers. They did not immediately provide a timetable for when the work will begin.

The county continues to monitor conditions along the affected stretch, warning motorists to expect closures or delays in areas where work could begin. More information will be released as plans advance.

Officials say the current repair estimate is preliminary and could change once detailed engineering and permitting work are complete. No definitive start date for construction has been announced.

“Environmental assessments and permitting may take several years,” wrote a spokesperson.
