SR 99 reopened after multiple cyclists struck in Seattle

All southbound lanes of SR 99 were blocked for more than two hours after two cyclists were struck early Monday morning in Aurora.

The accident occurred at Aurora Avenue N. and Roy Street. The two cyclists, a 30-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man on a Lime bike, were hit and are currently in critical condition.

Seattle Police confirmed a third person in his 20s was on a bike or scooter heading east down Roy Street when he turned left onto Aurora Avenue. The other two cyclists were following him, but rather than turning left, they went into Aurora Avenue, where they were struck, according to KIRO 7.

“They thought they could cross Aurora — SPD says they were unfamiliar with the area,” KIRO Newsradio reporter Luke Duecy said live at the scene. “A third person on a Lime bike turned because there’s a barrier.”

SPD noted the truck driver did not have signs of impairment and was released from the scene.

At approximately 7:36 a.m., Aurora Avenue was reopened for travel after a nearly two and a half hour closure.

A long-term investigation is currently underway.
