Major construction expected to back up weekend traffic

Traffic is going to be particularly bad this weekend with three major construction projects planned for the Puget Sound region.
Two sections of I-5 are going to see lane reductions for construction, and I-90 is going to be squeezed into the express lanes for 12 hours each night.
The state will be working on northbound I-5 near Sea-Tac, as well as southbound I-5 at the Ship Canal Bridge. The freeway will be down to two lanes between Highway 516 and Tukwila in the northbound direction.
Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson Tom Pearce says this is the first of eight weekends of paving and expansion-joint work on northbound I-5.

Two southbound lanes on the Ship Canal Bridge will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 2-10 a.m. for much-needed pothole repair.
Beginning Friday night, eastbound I-90 will be shuffled into the express lanes for the final striping and preparations for the new HOV lanes over Lake Washington. Saturday night, westbound I-90 will be squeezed into the express lanes.
“We’re going to see traffic backups,” Pearce said.
Additionally, we have several events in Seattle this weekend. The Seattle Mariners are in town. The Sounders have a match on Sunday. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is also Sunday.
