A manager of an Applebee’s in Bellevue was brutally attacked by an employee with a hammer.

The manager was closing up the restaurant, located on Bel Red Road, on Aug. 31 at approximately 1 a.m. when one of his employees, Marco Antonio Herrera-Chan, approached his office and said “lo siento,” according to court documents obtained by KIRO Newsradio.

Herrera-Chan, 48, then hit his manager, 56, in the head with a hammer. According to court documents, the manager couldn’t see clearly due to blood running down his head into his eyes.

He tried to hit the manager a second time, but the strike was blocked, leading to a scuffle between the two on the ground. Eventually, the manager stabbed Herrera-Chan with some nearby scissors. The suspect stopped fighting him, according to court documents, as the manager locked himself in his office and contacted the police.

Herrera-Chan stayed at the scene until police arrived. Before he was arrested, he told police he didn’t know why he did it and that his “mind closed” during the attack, court documents read. Herrera-Chan worked with the victim as a dishwasher for eight months. According to court documents, the two never had any issues or disputes.

He was charged with first-degree assault, with bail set at $100,000.

Herrera-Chan is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 9.
