It has been a while since police in Mukilteo have worked on a catalytic converter theft. It was a nationwide problem in 2022 but had since declined — until last week, when the department handled two cases.

Police believe the thefts may be a symptom of a larger issue. Whenever there is global instability, the price of precious metals soars. Catalytic converters contain significant amounts of these precious metals.

“Platinum, palladium, and rhodium are precious metals that typically go up in value. It may be the reason why thieves would target a catalytic converter to get some quick cash out of it,” said Mukilteo Police Officer Nathan Fabia.

A thief with the right tools can steal a converter in minutes

The thefts can happen day or night, in crowded parking lots and on the street. A determined thief with the right tools can steal a converter in just a couple of minutes. But there are ways to help protect your vehicle.

“Park in a garage whenever possible. If you can, park in a well-lit area. Exterior motion light or alarm, catalytic converter shield or anti-theft device,” Officer Fabia said.

Finding a replacement catalytic converter can be difficult and expensive. We can all protect each other. Keep an eye out, and if you see something, say something.

“Report suspicious activity. If you see anything around cars or parking lots, please don’t hesitate to call 911,” Officer Fabia said.
