Metal thieves recently hit Sumner Cemetery, stealing plaques and bronze markers, Sumner Police said Friday.

“While the destruction brought on by metal theft is not new, these are not just pieces of metal,” police said in a Facebook post. “Their loss is devastating to the families, to our cemetery staff, and to our community.”

Police are working with affected families to inform them about the thefts and to get the markers replaced as soon as possible.

“The VA is paying to replace the missing markers for veterans, and the city will pay for the rest,” the post stated.

Law enforcement wants anyone with information to call their tip line at 253-299-5678.

“If you run a scrap yard or know someone who does, contact Sumner Police directly if you see markers or plaques coming in,” police said.

Police are working to boost security at the cemetery.

“We want our facility to be safe and secure but also accessible to those who need it to mourn and remember their loved ones,” the post stated.
