A 23-year-old man died from a shooting in the Sand Point neighborhood Sunday morning, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, SPD received a call reporting multiple gunshots on 62nd Avenue Northeast near the Magnuson Park community center.

When they arrived, they found a man, identified by family as Skylar Johnson, on the ground in front of his apartment.

Unconfirmed reports from neighbors indicate Johnson walked outside his apartment and asked a group of people to quiet down as his girlfriend and two-month-old child were sleeping. At some point, someone shot him repeatedly.

“There were five, rapid sequence, gunfire shots,” a neighbor who did not want to be identified told KIRO Newsradio on Monday. “I heard a scream and called 911.”

Another neighbor heard the commotion.

“I heard the six shots and stuff, and then I came over here to the area,” a nearby resident told KIRO Newsradio. “The gentleman was laying down here under the tree, and they were trying to resuscitate him, but they said they couldn’t do it. He was unresponsive.”

Neighbor Jeff Trotto recalled the scene.

“I walked out and walked down near where the activity was and I saw from about five feet away as they put a tarp over his body,” he said

Neighbors said this is the third shooting in the area in the past month. Some said they are concerned for their safety, especially at night.

“No one likes to be close to violence in their neighborhood,” one neighbor said. “Am I afraid? No. Am I cautious? Yeah.”

According to SPD, Johnson was shot multiple times in the chest, succumbing to his injuries at the scene. Homicide unit detectives are now working to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting.

Johnson’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help his family with end-of-life costs and a memorial has been set up in honor of him.
