Americans want a thorough housecleaning

Commentators seem mystified by the churning political discontent sweeping the land. Even though the economy actually looks pretty good, the polls show Americans want a thorough housecleaning.

They are so desperate for this, they don’t care about the policy details. They just want complete outsiders who will wipe the slate clean.

So why are we in this mood? It all clicked when I was browsing Amazon and just out of curiosity, I looked up its current top seller. You know what it is?

It isn’t the Bible, or even Donald Trump’s “The Art of the Deal!” The number one book on Amazon was written by Marie Kondo.

It’s called “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.”

It’s a cleanup book.

The baby boomers are finally cleaning the ___ out of their attics and they figure they might as well de-clutter the country while they’re at it.

Kondo’s first and most important secret to successful de-cluttering is “tidy in one shot as quickly as possible.”

You must ruthlessly rid yourself of anything that does not give you joy, and only then do you organize what remains.

And that’s the national mood isn’t it? We’re surrounded by a paralyzing clutter of too many rules, too many social problems, too many groups begging for money, too many food studies &#8212 and we just want someone who will throw it all away for us. And only later will we worry about organizing what’s left.
