Seattle residents are now facing fines if they don’t get their compost into the right refuse bin. The rules of what goes where can be kind of confusing, so KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross has come up with an original song to help residents sort it all out.

It used to be the garbage man would never look inside your can. The only sorting going on was by the stray dogs on your lawn.

But now each thing you throw away must live to fight another day. To sort your garbage properly it takes a PhD.

Used to be the only sorting going on, was done by the stray dogs on your lawn, but that was wrong, so from now on, those days are gone. Let’s sing along.

Cans go into the can-can. Glass is for the glass-can, but you must remove the labels if you’re able. Keep plastic pieces separate or else you will regret it and brother is your conscience going to hurt.

The nice Seattle garbage man is spying on your garbage can, and if your trash is out of line, you’ll have to pay a dollar fine.

But still I sometimes get confused about the proper bin to use, that’s why I wrote this little song, feel free to sing along.

Please avoid the worst environmental sin, do not put your compost with the plastic or the papers or the dog poop or the light bulb or the car parts or the condoms.

Cans go into the can-can. Glass is for the glass-can, but you must remove the labels if you’re able. Keep plastic pieces separate or else they won’t accept it and you’ll have to pile it in the yard.

Cans go into the can-can, glass is for the glass-can, crush them if you can can, try to make them nice and flat, just like that.

Thank you for your troubles, sorting out you rubble, you’re rates are being doubled.
