Equal time for Rand Paul

On Thursday, I played clips from the former Ambassador to Syria who testified that, yes, there are moderate Syrian rebels that we can trust, and that we should arm in order to fight ISIL in the Syrian civil war.

But he also had a warning, “There are no angels in the Syrian war, now.”

So today, some equal time for Senator Rand Paul who can’t believe we’re on the brink of yet another Middle East war.

Paul accepts arming the rebels might be necessary now. But he called it penance for past mistakes. He says we’ve learned nothing from the misguided wars that created the current chaos.

“The intervention is clamor for boots on the ground. We should remember they were wrong about Iraq. They were wrong about Lebanon. They were wrong about Syria,” Paul says. “When will we quit listening to the advocates who have been wrong about every foreign policy position of the last two decades?”

He predicted that today’s allies will be tomorrow’s enemy – for one simple reason.

“Why don’t we ask the vetted, moderate Syrians how many will recognize Israel? I’m guessing it’s going to be a big goose egg. There’s not one of those so-called moderate rebels that will recognize Israel, and if they win, they’ll attack Israel next,” Paul says. “Several of the leaders have already said they would.”

Is he right? Is he right that we’re basically creating an Arab fundamentalist army that will eventually use American weapons and training to turn on Israel?

Israel has been remarkably quiet during this debate.

It occurs to me, we have the technology to disable cell phones with a kill switch. If only we could quietly install a kill switch in those rebel weapons shipments. Just in case.
