Here’s who owns the US debt.

Notice that except for China, Russia, and Brazil, the rest are all under our defense umbrella. As are a bunch of others lumped into the “All Other Nations Category.” They get the protection; we pay for it. Double in the case of the “Oil Exporting Nations” since we buy their oil AND pay for defense of their shipping lanes (as well as for the occasional war that’s “not about the oil”).

Suppose we just present them with a bill that – by a crazy coincidence – would exactly equal what we owe them…
