Is the Republican National Convention too white?

Jul 21, 2016, 3:58 PM

There have been question about demographic makeup of the Republican National Convention — it happens whenever there is a Republican gathering. The convention and Republican Party is often accused of being too white.

Are they too white? KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross asked.

Jason Rantz: What does that mean? You’re talking about Republicans who tend to be too white. So yes, it is too white. But that is what is currently appealing to the party. They have a problem when it comes to that. They absolutely need to do a better job of outreach to other communities.

The party is certainly trying to show diverse face. It sounds like they are trying to acknowledge this.

Dori Monson: I think the whole “too white” thing … I’m one of those people who thinks that’s an outrageous media construct. What I look at is: How can any individual best live their life? The values that this party espouses – I don’t subscribe to this party – the values this party espouses gives an individual from any background a better chance of succeeding. I wish people would focus more on the values of individuals, no matter what their skin color, rather than politics of grouping people together, because I think it’s dangerous and destructive and wrong.

Jason Rantz: But isn’t that the point? To your main point, people might be better served by the Republican Party. Certainly, it depends on who you’re talking to. African-Americans might be better served by the Republican Party. That’s why it’s a problem that it’s too white here. You’re not reaching that community and not making that point.

Monson: Yeah, but who talks about making that point? I wish media would focus more on what policy is better for individuals.

So what should the story of convention be?
