It’s time Donald Trump learned from an unlikely role model

Aug 5, 2016, 5:33 AM

Donald Trump likes to punch back and punch hard. But his sinking poll numbers indicate that may finally be backfiring.

If I may be so bold as to suggest another role model. There is this other controversial politician he might consider copying. A guy who doesn’t hesitate to go after his critics but whose poll numbers, unlike Donald Trump’s, have been rising.

Here’s a quote from him, ridiculing the mainstream media for criticizing his Iran deal.

Related: Is Donald Trump coming to Seattle this month?

“If there’s some news to be made, why not have some of these folks who were predicting disaster say, you know what, this thing actually worked,” he said. “But of course that wasn’t going to happen,” Obama continued. “Instead what we have is the manufacturing of outrage in a story that we disclosed in January.”

Who am I talking about? President Barack Obama, of course.

Now, I’m not saying whether he’s right or wrong about the deal itself. I’m just pointing out how he punches back.

He’s telling the reporters, “You guys cynically recycled old news to make me look bad.” He’s calling them a bunch of hacks! But he does it without calling them “a bunch of hacks.” Also without calling them ignorant, disgusting, or sleazy.

As a result, he still gets to throw his punch, but he makes it very difficult for his opponent to punch back.

You don’t have to agree with your opponents to learn from them, Mr. Trump. It can be our little secret.
