Listen to Dave’s Commentary: Longing for unity in a time of crisis
Here we are, longing for the feeling of unity we had during the crisis of ten years ago — even as we are feeling ZERO unity on the crisis we’re in right now.
Is it because we react differently to a crisis when it’s caused by terrorists? Maybe if we there were documents showing that terrorists wanted this economic crisis; if it turned out bin Laden wasn’t just planning to bring down a couple of buildings, but wanted to create massive unemployment and turn America into a “shadow of itself” — we’d come together once again to face that common enemy.
Well, if that’s what it takes, I have good news. We HAVE those documents. The Navy Seals found them when they killed bin Laden. And bin Laden DID in fact tell journalist Robert Fisk that he would turn America into “a shadow of itself.”
So the only question now is … do we let it happen?
Ten years ago, in a crisis, Congress rallied around President Bush, even though half of them thought he stole the election.
They approved billions in government spending without even a pretense of finding a way to pay for it. Cost didn’t matter because our future was at stake.
Well today, we’re in a crisis far WORSE than ten years ago. Our future really IS at stake this time. We could, in fact, become a “shadow” of ourselves, to quote a certain terrorist. Recreating the spirit of ten years ago means rallying around the President you’ve got — even if you don’t think he deserves to be there.
This time there is at least a PRETENSE of paying for it.
